Boys varsity golf team swings toward success

With more than 10 matches down, Monroe’s varsity boys’ golf team has had a decent season so far with the help of its coach, BJ Hoppe. The boys are continuing to show improvement throughout the season.

Senior co-captains AJ Gerweck and Aaron Bitz, have contributed both positive attitudes and low scores to the team this year. They will continue to lead the boys throughout the season into June.

The varsity team is made up of four seniors: Gerweck, Bitz, Marco Knezevich and Nick Spicer and four sophomores: Grant Petrangelo, Johnathon McNamee, Ethan Costello and Colton Baltrip.

“I had the privilege to be a captain my junior and senior year, it’s been an overall rewarding experience,” said Bitz.

Bitz is Monroe’s top golfer. He shot a nine-hole season low of 36 at Leslie Park on Monday, May 2. The Trojans’ home course is Green Meadows, where Bitz shot his season 18-hole low of 77.

“So far, the highlight of my season was coming in second place overall as a team at the Wyandotte Invitational Friday, Apr. 22,” said Gerweck.

The boys shot a 59, which was 13 under par in a scramble match. They fell to Roosevelt High School, but jumped in front of Trenton High School to claim second place.

The team has also won a respectable fourth place finish at the Monroe Invite Friday, April 15. This was the team’s first tournament of the season and has shown improvement ever since. Bitz led the team with a 77, followed by Gerweck 78, and Costello with a score of 84.

The Trojans are working toward qualifying for states as a team at the regional competition on June 1.

¨It would be a really cool experience to go to states as a sophomore and my first year on varsity,” said Petrangelo.
