It’s no question that going away to college can be very, very expensive. The cost of tuition, room, board, and textbooks will empty your pockets and drink your tears. However, we shouldn’t let the fear of student debt stop us from going away, earning a degree, and getting that “college experience.”
Let me just say, thank God for scholarships. For those of you who don’t know, a scholarship is a grant of payment made to support a student’s education, and is awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement.
There are many websites out there that offer scholarship contests for students who are about to enter college, or who already attend. Some scholarships are even available for any high school students, not just seniors. It’s never too early to start applying.
Most scholarship contests require filling out a survey, writing some sort of essay, or even just signing up for an account on their website.
New scholarships are offered weekly and monthly on websites like scholarships.com, cappex.com, michigancap.org, tutionfundingsources.com, colleges.niche.com, and many more. Google searching “scholarships” and it will show you a ton of websites.
Winners of these scholarships can win $500 to $10,000, or even their tuition completely paid for. The more money on the line, the more you have to do to complete the scholarship.
MHS Post-Secondary Planners Manuel Hopkins and Savannah Wendt are here to work with students on making college as affordable as possible. Hopkins’ and Wendt’s offices are located in the counselors’ office.
