Monroe High held its annual National Honor Society induction on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. The induction was previously scheduled for Feb. 3, but was postponed due to the fact the advisor, Matt Steele, could not make it.
A total of 83 new members were inducted to NHS, adding to the 142 previous members. So, the grand total of members is 225. New members consisted of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Each new member received a certificate, a card and a pin once they were inducted. Also, they had to recite the National Honor Society Pledge.
“I was very excited to become a part of NHS. It was a great honor and I look forward to participating in community events,” said sophomore and new member, Allie Cotterman.
NHS stands on four pillars – Leadership, Character, Service, and Scholarship. Each of these topics was presented by the NHS officers during the Candle Lighting Ceremony: Seniors Samantha Pfaff, President, David Nichols, Vice President, Tala Dahbour, Secretary, and Michael Peven, Treasurer. Monroe High School’s National Honor Society is part of the Delton Osborn Chapter.
Each year a guest speaker is invited to talk to the new members and is always different. This year Renee Darrow spoke. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Gabby’s Ladder. She spoke of the need of support from your parents and that if you are in a bigger environment you can grow.
After the ceremony, both new and old members, and their families were invited to have desserts and punch in the commons. Desserts were provided by the old members and there was a punch fountain.
