The Winterfest basketball game was Feb. 22 at Monroe High against Chelsea High School Bulldogs. The junior varsity team won 45-41 and the varsity girls lost 39-46.

During the halftime of the girls’ junior varsity and varsity game, the Winterfest court winners were announced.

The freshman court was crowned first with winners Vannity Anderson and Anthony Wehner. Sophomore court was crowned next with winners Caleb Blackwell and Ella Foshag. Junior court winners followed, Ty Ickes and Nini Anderson. Senior Egor Mikhaylenko won senior Mr. Legs, and there was a tie for the senior queens, Emily New and Gabby Highers.

The first half of the junior varsity game started with Trojans in the lead, but the scores got close nearing the end.

After the crowning, the game picked up speed and the Trojans fought to score. The Trojans improved their defense to tie the game.

JV ended the game fighting strong to keep the ball on their side of the court, beating the Bulldogs in the end.

The varsity game started off well with a three point lead for the Trojans but by halftime the score got closer.

Foshag said that she thought the crowning was an “out of body experience.”

“I was so excited and surprised that it took me a moment to take in such a magical moment,” Foshag said.

New and Highers agreed that they are glad that they won together. “When they announced that there was a tie, I didn’t think much of it, but I’m glad I get to share my crown with Gabby,” New said.

Student council advisor Jeremy Kimberlin said that he’s happy to see the students having fun. “The chaos that comes with planning such an event is fun for most people involved,” Kimberlin said.
