Student reviews new Star Wars movie

Liv Compora, Reporter

There’s no stopping the Star Wars franchise. This was clear when The Last Jedi hit the theatres last week. Thrilling, filled with twists and turns, the heroes of the galaxy far, far away returned to the big screen to duke it out.

Rivalries between the rising prodigies on either side of the galaxy, Kylo Ren and Rey, continue on their roller-coaster journey to the top. Familiar faces as well as some new characters emerge to help lead their side to victory.

Strong female-leads also made this episode shine. Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), as well as a new character, Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), brought their own individual elements to the table, which made for a very empowering three hours. The Star Wars franchise is growing and changing with the times, and becoming more diverse, which is a plus.

While this installment in the saga was exhilarating, it left a vast majority of the audience searching for answers to questions addressed previously in the prior installment, The Force Awakens. Many of the hot-topics in the Force Awakens were not thoroughly addressed in the latest installment. Without giving any spoilers, the ending definitely calls for many more chapters of the saga.

Through power, betrayal, and downfalls, the movie was overall one of the most exciting episodes of the saga; I did not find myself bored or having to go take the inevitable “this-movie-is-awful-so-im-going-to-go-act-like-I-need-to-use-the-bathroom” walk of shame even once. That alone should get a round of applause from me, considering I have the attention span of an acorn. Needless to say, with the movie’s faults and flaws, including a couple quite noticeable director and scene errors, it is definitely a must-see for all Star Wars fanatics.
