Icy roads: a big concern to the large percent of the student body that drives to and from school every day. Are you prepared for the slippery Michigan roads?
“I just make sure I brake super early before stop signs so that I don’t end up slamming on the breaks and sliding out into the road.” says sophomore Alee Hill.
Braking early is just one of the many safety precautions you as a student can help keep yourselves safe during these wintery months.
“Take your time and don’t worry about whether or not you’re going to be late; worry about your safety.” advises junior Rebekah Huff.
Pay attention to the weather before going out. Taking that extra ten minutes to survey weather conditions before leaving will benefit you more than leaving in hurry and getting caught in a snow storm.
If you do end up sliding, the best way to handle this is by turning in the direction that your rear wheels are turning (http://www.icyroadsafety.com). If you turn too far, then your car may begin sliding in that direction. The easiest fix is to just steer in the opposite direction.
Make sure you wear your seatbelt. Even though you should always be wearing your seatbelt, it’s a bit more important during these risky road conditions.
