Michael Peven and Tyler Hensley are two seniors who have shown that dedication and hard work pay off, literally. They are flying down to Disneyworld today, Friday, Jan. 14, at noon to compete in a Scholar Gamers contest.
The two heard about the competition in their calculus class from senior Molly Gaynier.
“We thank her, and we wish she could come with us, but unfortunately we can only have one parent,” said Peven.
They played games on the computer like Space Invaders and Tower Stack. During the online competition, Hensley had the highest score on Tower Stack out of all of the competitors.
Mike and Hensley will be flying to Disney’s Orlando Florida today at 12:15 p.m. with an expenses-paid trip and return on Sunday, Jan. 16. They will be attending the contest with one other high school student from Michigan, and each is bringing one parent.
The first prize winner of the competition will win $10,000, second prize will be $7,500, and third prize is $5,000, all of which will be given in scholarship funds. Every competitor will earn $500 for attending the contest. There will also be prizes such as Kindles and Ipods awarded during the competition.
Michael stated that, if they win the money, he plans to use it to finance his higher education at Johns Hopkins University. Hensley plans to save it to use wherever he goes when he becomes a Rhodes Scholar.
Both were excited to go on the trip and spend time at Disneyworld. “I’ll be able to spend quality time with Tyrel Hensley, my best friend since the age of three,” stated Peven.
