The 74th Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and television of the 2016 year live on Jan. 8 from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The eventful night included a politically-charged speech from actress Meryl Streep and a record-breaking award sweep for the jazz-infused musical “La La Land,” which won seven awards, one of those awards being Best Comedy or Musical.

In the television categories, Netflix series “The Crown” and Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” dominated. “The Crown” won best drama, beating out fellow Netflix fan-favorite “Stranger Things,” HBO’s medical-based “Westworld,” NBC’s feel-good “This is Us” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The show’s lead actress Claire Foy also took the award for best actress. The second most nominated film of the night, “Moonlight” took home only one award, but an important one. It won Best Picture, Drama, beating out action-thriller “Hell or High Water,” emotional family drama “Lion,” five-time nominated “Manchester by the Sea” and war drama “Hacksaw Ridge.”

Disney’s “Zootopia” won the award for Best Animated Picture against box office smash “Moana” and star-studded musical “Sing” (goldenglobes.com).

Meryl Streep won the honorary Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, with over 30 Golden Globes nominations and 8 wins under her belt. In her passionate six-minute-long speech, she tackled the topics of politics and how she felt about the outcome of the election. She ended her speech with a quote from the beloved Carrie Fisher, “Take your broken heart, and make it into art.”

The action-packed night wouldn’t be complete without some controversy. Announcers kept confusing the film “Fences” starring Viola Davis and Denzel Washington and historical drama “Hidden Figures,” combining them to make a movie that doesn’t exist called “Hidden Fences.”

The viewing ratings have yet to come in, but they have high hopes that it will be up from last year’s 18.5 million viewers due to host Jimmy Fallon’s large fan base.
