Teachers participate in new stepathon challenge

Move MHS move! Learning Resources Specialist Mary Bullard organized a competition among teachers to find out who can walk the most steps. The race started on April 4 and will end on May 27.

In order to sign up, teachers paid an entry fee of $5 which will go toward prizes and gift certificates at the end of the competition. Their only job is to use a step counter to keep track of how much they’re walking.

Teachers then chose whether they would walk alone or combine with other teachers to form teams. To even out the competition, the total amount of steps by each group will be divided by the number of people.

Bullard said because of the snow and rain, it hasn’t been an ideal week to start the competition. Although walking outside is preferred, she said that just walking around the building, teachers can automatically get about five miles.

“Once we really start getting involved, it will be fun,” Bullard said.

Running and walking is a great way to keep healthy and to forget about the winter, Bullard said.

One team consists of Douglas Schade, Lisa Sellers and Laura Fioritto. Fioritto said they are very competitive and are motivating each other to walk more.

“I will destroy everybody in this competition,” said Fioritto.

The end goal is to find out how many miles MHS teachers can go. Bullard said she doesn’t think we’ll make it to the west coast, but we will definitely go to Chicago.

For Bullard, running is a lifetime sport. She’s been running 5ks, 10ks and half marathons for most of her life. When she was little, girls didn’t have the opportunity for varsity sports, but she first took an interest in running when her brother ran. Nowadays, Bullard said her family competes over how many awards and medals they earn.
