On Monday March 2, the Detroit Lions decided to not use its franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndomokung Suh.
ESPN analyst Adam Schefter believes Suh will likely sign with a team that is willing to pay big money, such as the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars or even the Chicago Bears.
Others believed that Suh would have had the franchise tag placed on him, which would have guaranteed his stay in Detroit for at least one more season. Sadly for Lions fans, Suh will likely sign somewhere else now that it hasn’t been used on him.
“It takes a little bit of time to get good players signed,” said Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew in an interview with the Detroit News.
The second overall pick in the 2010 draft was asking for an enormous $100 million contract, which would have been one of biggest for all defensive lineman in the NFL; however, Suh may have been worth the money.
According to ESPN, Suh has recorded 238 tackles and 36 sacks in his five years for Detroit, who has seen two playoff appearances and the No.1 overall best defense all in the last three years.
“I think there’s a very, very good chance that we can get something done with him in the next few weeks,” team President Tom Lewand told Local 4 news Detroit.
Detroit has until March 10 to sign Suh to a deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent where he can either sign back with Detroit or find a new destination.
