Though used to being in the spotlight for his talent of being a one-man band, senior Diondre Fletcher is going to experience a new kind of attention by being in the running for Homecoming King.
Though a drum major, Fletcher actually knows and preforms several instruments that he uses in concerts and marching band. When he is not participating in band, Fletcher is practicing his skit for homecoming.
“We’re planning on doing a little song and dance number. I know we’re using “Paper Planes” by MIA, “All About that Bass” by Meghan Trainor, and “Almost” by Beyoncé,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher’s main job on the field as drum major is to conduct the band onto the field, conduct the songs, be in charge during the game in the stands, and discipline the band if it gets too rowdy.
The mallets, French horn, bass guitar, regular guitar, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, and tuba are all the instruments Fletcher can play.
“I play whatever Mr. Nick wants me to play,” he said.
Fletcher said the instrument he plays the most is actually his least favorite instrument, the French horn.
“It’s the devil’s instrument,” he said. He explained that it is difficult because they play mostly upbeats.
Fletcher went through the process for drum major in March of his sophomore year.
“You go through this entire process. They teach you how to conduct, different responsibilities,” he said.
Fletcher doesn’t get to prepare for the homecoming hoopla with rest of the band because he is on court this year.
“We pick a song that goes with the theme and play however many times it takes for (the court) to come out. It’s pretty simple,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher said he was excited to be nominated, though his initial response was, “I could care less,” and, “I’m on court! I mean, I’ll take it or leave it.”
