With more than 14 matches down, Monroe’s JV and varsity girls have had a decent season so far with the help of JV coach BJ Hoppe and Varsity coach Ron Cooper, who is now on leave according to Monroe High’s athletic director Dr. John Ray.
“Hoppe will now be the JV and varsity coach until the end of the season; we will be looking for a new coach and then we will go from there,” said Ray.
With many tournaments and matches completed, the golfers still have until October until their season is done. Talking with varsity player sophomore Jordan Swatzke, she has had a good season so far.
“My best tournament would be the tournament we had on Sept. 11, our home meet, and nine holes against Saline, shot my career best of 38,” said Swatzke.
JV playing very well has gotten second place numerous times against Ann Arbor Pioneer and first place against Saline. Varsity has played a total of nine matches and tournaments while JV has played five. With six girls on each team, they have yet to play or already have competed against Bedford, Saline, Skyline, Tecumseh, SMCC, Jefferson, Airport and Southgate. Coach Hoppe, who has been coaching for three seasons, said, “We have done a lot better than the past; we are still building the program.”
JV sophomore Lauren Malik has played golf since her freshman year and has not missed any matches.
“I like meeting new people from other schools and like playing with my close friends, and I have always taken interest in golfing,” said Malik.
Malik shot an alternate shot with teammate Kacy Hall, also a JV and returning golfer, but got an individual best score of 56 playing against Saline. Both teams are playing as well as they can and are great representatives of Monroe’s girls golf.
