On April 27, Monroe High held its first ever dodgeball tournament. The tournament included several players and six teams, who all competed in several rounds of the game. The tournament was a fundraiser having all proceeds going to the March of Dimes held at the state park each year.
Each team had an opportunity to play each other in the exhibition rounds then all competed in the elimination rounds. Each team had a team name and a team captain, and most teams had a T-shirt representing their team name. There were even two teams of staff from Monroe High. The teams were really involved and got a good experience out of the tournament.
The tournament went as far as having voluntary referees and a set rule book. No face shots and once you were claimed ‘out’ you were out.
Some students had opinions on what could be done to make this experience better.
“They should get real experienced refs,” said junior Logan Harris.
Juniors Harris and Riley Wood were both on the team of ‘The Dodgefathers’ and ended up winning the whole tournament with their six all junior boys team.
“It was a good time and very competitive,” said Wood.
The Dodgefathers competed against Austin and the Bees for the championship title in the final round.
“It felt like we won the World Series,” said Harris.
After the tournament was over, everyone thought it was a fun and creative way to fundraise for a good cause. Although a dodgeball tournament isn’t set in stone for next year, players are hopeful to be able to come and compete again.
“Of course, we’ll be back, it was fun, and we need to repeat the win for next year,” said Harris.
