MHS, MMS face potential threats

Potential threats plagued Monroe Middle and High School today, Jan. 12. However, administration and law officials were on hand, making sure that “potential” never turned into reality. The threats were unrelated and, due to investigations and communication by officials and community, school resumed as scheduled.

Emails were sent out to staff and parents from superintendent Julie Everly, stating, “We were made aware of some disturbing posts on social media regarding school safety. Because of our students and families engaging and communicating this, we have cooperated with our partners at the Monroe County Sheriff Department and the City of Monroe Police Department to assure that our schools can operate in a safe and secure way.”

Jeff McVeigh, MMS Principal, sent out another email that was unrelated to the one Everly sent out a few hours earlier. McVeigh’s email stated, “Monroe Middle School is now in secure mode due to a nearby neighborhood situation that is being taken care of by the City of Monroe Police Department.”

As for an alleged photo of a shotgun posted to the “Snapchat” app with the caption “Don’t come to school tomorrow” that began to surface around students, rumors began to form.

“We are still investigating. We aren’t even completely sure if this student goes to Monroe, or if the Monroe they’re referring to is Monroe, Michigan,” Said Deputy Joe Hammond.
