The Monroe High boys and girls varsity cross country teams will compete at the state finals this Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.

The top three teams at the Regional meet qualified for States. The Monroe girls placed second with 69 points, edging out Wyandotte Roosevelt by two points. Monroe’s boys beat Bedford by three points, with a total of 76 points. Saline’s boys and girls both took first.

The varsity girls will race at 2 p.m., and the varsity boys will race at 3 p.m. Admission for the meet is $8; tickets can be purchased on the MHSAA website.

Coach Mark Scoles is very excited for his team and what the future may bring.

“Our team still isn’t as big as I hope it will be, but we have enough people committed now that we can expect to go to the state meet for a few more years at least,” Scoles said.

Senior captain Anthony Wohlfeil has raced at MIS previously and had some advice for his teammates.

“The athletes at the state finals are the best of the best, so runners should expect the pace to go out fast. One thing that athletes should work on is keeping themselves focused during the race, and make a conscious effort to minimize how much they slow down with everyone else,” Wohlfeil said.

Sophomore Jake Maas is happy for his teammates.

“I was really hoping to make varsity, but I’m still glad my team gets to go to States. They deserve it,” Maas said.

This is the first time since 2009 that Monroe High has sent both the boys and girls varsity teams to the state meet.
