The Monroe varsity basketball team faced off against Ypsilanti Lincoln March 9 at districts but lost38-49. They were going for the SEC red division but didn’t make it.
It was a close game, but not enough to win. The districts were hosted by Saline this year. Monroe started off on the right foot ending round one round with 8-6 but fell lower each round. Round two was 7-14, round three 12-18, and lastly round four was a tie 11-11.
Monroe was always one foot behind them, but we only lost by 11 points. Monroe had many student and parents cheering on in the bleachers.
This district final is the first for new coach Delmar Hoskins.
“The boys were very good on the court and consistent. We did well in quarter one and were able to tie in the last quarter,” Hoskins said. “All I can say is you lose some you win some. The team was a bit devastated but definitely next year we can win districts and, hopefully, go to states.”
Hoskins reflected on the year after the game with pride.
“One thing I would’ve changed is for us to have a little more practice but the team did well,” said Hoskins.
The team is looking forward to next year and many J.V people will be trying out for varsity. They plan on going to states next year and bringing home the trophy.
