Monroe High boys and girls bowling team is one of the many sport teams MHS offers during the winter season. The team is coached by Scott Bray and is made up of seven guys and five girls.
At MHS many students are not aware of the team, let alone some things the team does. Here are eleven facts you probably didn’t know about MHS’ bowling teams.
No. 1 the team has no set practices. Each member usually bowls four or five times a week on his/her own time.
No. 2 They have anywhere between one to three meets per week. Many of the days they are released early from school.
“I just do it to get out of school early,” said senior Kevin Suttles, captain of the boy’s team.
No. 3 This year the bowling team recently decided to make nicknames for everyone on it. For example, sophomore Austin Bray is called “fudgie” and freshman Will Clark likes to be called Polish Hammer.
No. 4 Did you know MHS’ boys bowling team is ranked second in the SEC division? Overall, the boys seem to be having a great season with a record of 7-2.
“The team is doing pretty good this season, so far,” said Suttles.
No. 5 Many teammates said that junior James Watterson is what makes bowling fun and enjoyable.
“My favorite thing about the school’s bowling team is the teammates that are on both boys and girl team,” said junior Alexis Gillenkirk.
No. 6 Bowlers mostly practice at Nortel Lanes located on Telegraph Rd. This is also where most meets take place for the teams.
No. 7 Unlike most sports who wear jerseys, the bowling team’s uniform is a polo with black dress pants.
No. 8 On average, most of members have been bowling for at least five years. Some members have been bowling ever since they could walk!
No. 9 Up to eight players are allowed on each team. This year, the guy’s team is made up of seven and the girl’s team consists of five members.
“We have a lot of fun being ourselves but we can get down on each other a lot,” said Bray, member of the boy’s team.
No. 10 Out of all 12 members, only two guys are left handed bowlers. This is not uncommon.
No. 11 You can only take six girls and six boys to regionals. Therefore, all girls will qualify, but not all the guys will be able to join.
“One of us will not be able to compete at regionals this season; we are not sure who it will be yet,” said Bray.
The date for regionals is not yet announced
