Sandy Michels has recently taken over Julie Oddo’s math classes due to Oddo taking a medical leave. Michels started right after winter break ended and will be teaching Oddo’s classes until the end of March. Michels and Oddo have known each other for six years now.
Michels has been substituting for seven years. She has substituted at Mason, Ida, Jefferson and Monroe. She prefers substituting at Monroe. She enjoys working with high school students. She has had five long term assignments in the math department.
“I like substituting because I can move around a lot and keep in touch with students,” Michels said. Michels has an engineering degree from Michigan Tech. She was an engineer until she switched to teaching.
She spent time in Oddo’s classroom and is familiar with her classroom procedures, rules, and expectations. She has worked with some of the students in Oddo’s classroom already and is very excited to continue to work with the students.
Many of the students were relieved and excited when they found out Michels was going to be filling in for Oddo.
“I have had Michels as a substitute teacher before and she was very helpful,” Junior Dominic Wise said.
Wise said that he was relieved and excited that they were getting someone who knows math and will be able to teach it. Oddo will hopefully be back during the third trimester. Michels and Oddo hope that the transition will be smooth and easy.
